About the Department Department of Functional English began functioning as a separate department in 1998 with special focus on Communicative English and English Language Teaching. The department regularly conducts Conferences, Seminars and Workshops every year. Resource persons are invited to talk on specific topics and career development. The Indo-Anglian Theatre Fest is conducted annually where all the students of the department participate compulsorily. Students produce their own scripts and stage plays. The theatre pursues the purpose of enhancing the communicative skills of the students as well as developing their personality. The best play of the Department participates in the National Theatre Festival being organized by Christ University Bangalore and participates in the University Arts festivals. The department also have a Book club to inculcate reading habits in the students.

Achievements of the Department

Dr. Premanand M.E. has won three prestigious awards – M M Ghani Award for Best Teacher, University of Calicut (2016), Rotary Club of Calicut Metropolis, Best Teacher Award in 2015 and Best Techno Faculty Award instituted by ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu, in 2014, from among a pool of over 2000 teachers using ICT in classrooms. Effective 2019, Nuts and Bolts of English figures as Suggested Practice Workbook for BA Functional English students. Two books, Media Studies – Print Media and Media Studies- Electronic Media and www.englishskillsone.com Progressive Web App are also resource material.
Dr. Premanand holds a copyright for Basic English Grammar Mind Map.

Radio Club
English Department. Calling the youth on Yuva Vani has seen many of our students participating in campus programmes. The Face behind the voice – a programme was put up wherein the students met Mr. Bobby who is the favourite voice on AIR. Radio Club coordinator, Anuradha P R, shared her thoughts on Jnathpith award winner, Amitav Ghosh in AIR, 2019.

 

Indo-Anglian Theatre

Launched by the Hon. Justice R. Basanth during the Sanjayan Centenary celebration in the year 2002, organized by the Dept of English in collaboration with the Prof. Wilson H. Mackaden Foundation. Indo-Anglian Theatre Fest is conducted annually where all the students of the department participate compulsorily. Students produce their own scripts and stage plays. The theatre pursues the purpose of enhancing the communicative skills of the students as well as developing their personality. The best play of the Department participates in the National Theatre Festival being organized by Christ University Bangalore and participates in the University Arts festival. The Indo-Anglian theatre of the English department celebrated its 15th anniversary by taking its annual interdepartmental theatre fest to an intercollegiate level. Over a period of 2 days, 19th & 20th of February 2018, various competitions related to theatre were held.
