The Department of Economics, Malabar Christian College, Kozhikode and the EMS Chair for Marxian Studies and Research, University of Calicut organised a One-Day National Seminar on Second Demographic Dividend in the College Auditorium on 04.11.2019. Dr. K.S. James, Director, International Institute of Population Sciences, Mumbai inaugurated the Seminar and delivered the key-note address. Dr. James stated that the State of Kerala is at a stage of demographic transition, ready to reap the benefits of the second demographic dividend.
Dr. Uday Shankar Mishra, Professor at the prestigious Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a lecture on Demography and Federal Fiscal Transfers: The Population Factor. Dr. Mishra reiterated that the change in weightages and the adoption of 2011 Census will harm the interests of the State of Kerala. Dr. Vinoj Abraham, Professor, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram presented a paper on Women’s Labour-force Participation in the context of changing demographic structure in India. Dr. Godwin Samraj DP, Principal, Malabar Christian College presided over the function. Prof. V. Rajagopalan, Visiting Professor at the EMS chair, Mr. Joseph S. Daniel, Manager of the College and Mr. Padmajith, General Secretary College Union spoke in the Seminar. A total of 240 delegates from various universities and colleges participated in the Seminar. A total of eight research papers on the Seminar theme were presented by the participants.
