| Department of Functional English began functioning as a separate department in 1998 with special focus on Communicative English and English Language Teaching. The department regularly conducts Conferences, Seminars and Workshops every year. Resource persons are invited to talk on specific topics and career development. The Indo-Anglian Theatre Fest is conducted annually where all the students of the department participate compulsorily. Students produce their own scripts and stage plays. The theatre pursues the purpose of enhancing the communicative skills of the students as well as developing their personality. The best play of the Department participates in the National Theatre Festival being organized by Christ University Bangalore and participates in the University Arts festivals. The department also have a Book club to inculcate reading habits in the students. |

| Any other | Achievements of the Department Dr. Premanand M.E. has won three prestigious awards – M M Ghani Award for Best Teacher, University of Calicut (2016), Rotary Club of Calicut Metropolis, Best Teacher Award in 2015 and Best Techno Faculty Award instituted by ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu, in 2014, from among a pool of over 2000 teachers using ICT in classrooms. Indo-Anglian Theatre Launched by the Hon. Justice R. Basanth during the Sanjayan Centenary celebration in the year 2002, organized by the Dept of English in collaboration with the Prof. Wilson H. Mackaden Foundation. Indo-Anglian Theatre Fest is conducted annually where all the students of the department participate compulsorily. Students produce their own scripts and stage plays. The theatre pursues the purpose of enhancing the communicative skills of the students as well as developing their personality. The best play of the Department participates in the National Theatre Festival being organized by Christ University Bangalore and participates in the University Arts festival. The Indo-Anglian theatre of the English department celebrated its 15th anniversary by taking its annual interdepartmental theatre fest to an intercollegiate level. Over a period of 2 days, 19th & 20th of February 2018, various competitions related to theatre were held. |

Established in 1998, the Department of Functional English has played a pivotal role in advancing language education with a strong emphasis on Communicative English and English Language Teaching (ELT). Under the visionary leadership of its first Head of Department Merlyn Premdas, the department began functioning as a separate academic entity dedicated to enhancing students’ linguistic competence, critical thinking, and communicative abilities—especially in alignment with the institutional commitment to education without discrimination.
The FYUG Programme offered by the department is meticulously designed to meet the demands of the 21st-century knowledge society, integrating language proficiency, digital literacy, cultural sensitivity, and lifelong learning as core competencies. The curriculum not only equips students with academic knowledge but also prepares them for professional and social engagement in a globalized world.
To enrich the learning experience and expand students’ horizons, the department organizes Conferences, Seminars, and Workshops annually. These events invite distinguished resource persons to deliver lectures and training sessions on contemporary themes and career-oriented topics. A major highlight of the department’s cultural engagement is the Indo-Anglian Theatre Fest, a compulsory annual event where students write, direct, and perform plays. This initiative fosters not only communicative fluency but also creativity, confidence, and teamwork. Outstanding productions go on to represent the institute at various University Arts Festivals. In 2024, the department hosted an International Seminar on Cultural Studies, reinforcing its academic standing and commitment to interdisciplinary research and global dialogue. To cultivate a deeper appreciation for literature and reading,the department also runs the Poetree Club and Book Club, providing students with a platform for discussion, analysis, and literary exploration.
The department’s student support initiatives focus on mentoring, career guidance, language lab access, and co-curricular engagement, ensuring that students from all social and economic backgrounds are empowered to succeed. These initiatives echo the institute’s mission to provide quality education that reaches the lowest strata of society, nurture intellectual curiosity, and inspire students to discover their unique potential.
