The department of Chemistry was established in 1957 with the bachelor’s degree course and the post graduation course was started in 1999. The department became a research department offering PhD. Course in 2008.

Established in 1957, the Department of Chemistry at Malabar Christian College (MCC), Kozhikode, has a proud legacy of over seven decades in shaping generations of chemists, educators, and researchers. From its beginnings with pre-degree courses, the department has evolved into a vibrant center for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies, remaining deeply rooted in the college’s tradition of value-based and holistic education. The department currently offers a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUG) in Chemistry, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This interdisciplinary and outcome-based programme provides a strong foundation in core chemistry, enhanced by skill-based courses, electives, and integrated research components, preparing students for careers in academia, industry, education, and Public service commission. The Postgraduate Programme (M.Sc. Chemistry) emphasizes advanced theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory training, and research aptitude. Students gain hands-on experience with modern instruments and undertake project-based learning in fields such as green chemistry, nanoscience, environmental chemistry, and computational chemistry. The Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) in Chemistry promotes high-quality research and innovation in various domains including Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Analytical, Environmental, and Materials Chemistry. Current research strengths include Computational Chemistry, Nanochemistry, and Electrochemistry. Admissions follow UGC norms and are based on an entrance test and interview. The department offers a supportive and well-equipped research environment guided by experienced faculty. In addition to this the department offers certificate courses in Food Chemistry, Food Analysis, and Cheminformatics exclusively for current B.Sc. and M.Sc. Chemistry students, enhancing their academic and practical skillsets beyond the regular curriculum. To ensure holistic student development, the department has implemented several student support and enrichment initiatives, including:

The department boasts several alumni who have secured prestigious fellowships such as CSIR-JRF, GATE, and INSPIRE, and hold positions in reputed institutions in India and abroad. Faculty members are actively involved in UGC-funded and interdisciplinary research and have published extensively in reputed journals. The department regularly hosts national seminars, workshops, and awareness programmes in association with organizations such as the Calicut Chemistry Collective (CCC), Higher education Council and KSCSTE. Noteworthy academic interactions include visits by eminent scientist such as Prof. K.L. Sebastian, Honorary Professor at IISc Bangalore and Dean (R&D) at IIT Palakkad. A landmark moment in the department’s history was the visit of Nobel Laureate Prof. Morten Meldal (2022 Nobel Laureate in chemistry) on 12th February 2024, which further cemented its position in the global academic community.
